Getting your home inventory in hand is a lot easier than you might think.

It kicks off with your free, no-obligation consultation

This only takes about half an hour. We’ll meet at your house to discuss your inventory and tour your home together. If you have items in your garage, shed or studio, we’ll plan on including those, too. With an idea of what you need, how large your house is, and how many belongings we’ll need to document, I can prepare a time estimate and quotation on-the-spot.

Once you’ve had a chance to review your quotation and you’re ready to proceed, we’ll schedule an appointment for your inventory, get a signed agreement and a $100 non-refundable retainer.

Inventory day

Together, we’ll visit each room and carefully itemize all of your important possessions. I’ll photograph and document your belongings in detail, including brands, models, serial numbers and anything else that can identify the item and its value. I’ll also map the location of the room within the house, and create a video record of the room as it exists now. After the interiors, we’ll move outside to videotape the exterior and record the detail and condition of materials and work on the house.

Your VB Home Inventory Portfolio

Within two weeks, I’ll deliver your portfolio with a hard-copy document of your inventory, including photographs and detailed descriptions, and two flash drives containing the inventory documentation and the videos. At this point, the balance of your payment is due.

It’s a good idea to store your inventory documentation, including at least one of the backup flash drives, somewhere away from your home. That might be a safe deposit box or with a trusted friend or relative.

I’ll also store a backup flash drive of your inventory in a safe deposit box for you for a year. There’s no additional charge for this service.

Keeping it current

Your belongings change over time, and you’ll want to keep track of that fridge you replaced or the new TV for the media room. During the first year, I’ll update – at no additional charge – minor additions or changes to your inventory. All you need to do is send me a description and receipt.

At the end of the every year, it’s a good idea to review and update your inventory to keep you protected. If you’ve made substantial changes or additions to your belongings, or have remodeled your home, a site visit may be in order to make sure we document, photograph and record the additions. As long as we keep on top of your inventory, these visits are short and economical.

I can continue to maintain a copy of your inventory in our safe deposit box for a $25 annual fee (subject to change), which includes updating minor changes you can provide by email.
